Jim Steele earned B.S. and M.A. degrees in Biology from San Francisco State University, where he served as Director of SFSU's Sierra Nevada Field Campus from 1984 to 2010. He was Principal Investigator for the Neotropical Migratory Bird Monitoring of Riparian Habitats on the Tahoe National Forest project (1991-2007) and later taught AP Biology and molecular biology at the university level.
